What are Golf Ball Markers Made of?

To reiterate the USGA’s “Rules of Golf”, The Golf ball markers are made of “small coins or similar objects” or “specially made markers”. By “specially made markers”, the USGA may be referring to ball markers made to carry the logo of a golf company or the name of a golf course. Some of these are made of metal discs.

The current trend in golf is using a poker chip or a ball marker similar to its size. This, however, brought confusion. Can a player receive a penalty for using a poker chip?

Looking into the said “Rules of Golf”, it does not seem to follow the “small coin or another similar object” clause.

But Frank Guastella, a PGA Master Professional, answered this with “No.” He explained that “Rule 20-1” is a recommendation for best practices. Therefore, if you “fail to act” by this rule, you will not be penalized.

Can You Mark Someone Else’s Ball in Golf?

You or your partner or someone you designate to do this for you can mark your ball. In the same way that you can mark your partner’s ball or someone’s ball if you are designated to do this for him.

You can mark it if you need to lift or clean the golf ball. However, you may not do this when another ball is in motion. This will influence the result of that stroke.

But what if the player did not mark his ball but you need him to do so because you believe that it will interfere with your shot?

It’s the player’s right to ask another player to use a ball marker if the golf ball can affect his stroke.
